Tuchel Desires Bellingham's Fire So Long As The Three Lions' Ace Sets Aside Egotism Outside.
A single omission proved sufficient. A second one and it could have seemed spiteful from Thomas Tuchel, who is much too clever not to understand that securing World Cup glory is probably going to require contributions by Jude Bellingham, although it is also on the midfielder to blend into the strategic frameworks and squad hierarchies essential with England now that he is back in Tuchel's warm embrace.
The manager desires his aggressive mentality, his fire, but it is a matter of harnessing it constructively. Skill is important but the squad know from bitter experience that there is consequences when celebrity dominates. Still, a message has been sent.
The midfielder had plenty to reflect on after his omission of the previous squad. He observed England qualify at the upcoming World Cup in his absence. He saw Morgan Rogers excel as a counterpressing No 10. He listened as Tuchel mention appreciating the team's dynamism and principles. Inevitably, he has reacted in champion style, finding the back of the net for his club against their rivals and the Italian side. Inclusion was a must; another omission would have left his World Cup hopes precarious.
The hope is that the manager will have a midfielder focused on frightening rivals instead of teammates. Ultimately, in purely sporting terms, there is no advantage to creating tension with one of the best players in the world. The ideal scenario is that his period out of the team has demonstrated that playing for one's country is a precious, precarious thing. Tuchel, for his part, can now throw a protective shield for the 22-year-old after demonstrating that he is not afraid to make big calls.
“There is no problem regarding him, and no concern about his personality,” Tuchel said. “Jude displays the edge. You need a sharp mentality to reach the heights that he has. We all need to support him and establish an environment which he can [have] that intensity towards opponents and in pursuit of success we are building as a team.”
The star dominated much of the focus at the team news conference for the upcoming meaningless matches against one opponent and the other. Any other news? Indeed, how about Phil Foden? This is a further gifted No 10 requiring support and direction. Foden has been absent for the national team since spring and has struggled to reach his best recently but Tuchel was impressed by the 25-year-old after his display in Manchester City’s win against Borussia Dortmund recently.
The question, though, is the best way to deploy the attacking talents at available. Rogers and Eberechi Eze deserve their spots and there will be a strong case to select another youngster once he recovers from a persistent groin problem. Would taking five No 10s to the tournament be excessive? The previous manager failed to discover the correct balance at Euro 2024. He made concessions by squeezing Foden and Bellingham into the team, cramping the captain's style as a result.
It seems unlikely the current manager making the same mistake if it hurts the attacking balance. There is room for one No 10, with speedy wingers on the flanks. Clarity helps. He is selected as a central attacker. Bournemouth’s Alex Scott, called up for the first time, is a No 8 and the returning Wharton will battle Elliot Anderson as a No 6. Additionally, there is no wide role for Foden, who must play central. Tuchel prefers him near the striker. “It is illogical to tell Phil: ‘We want you in the team but there’s no space in your preferred role, could you fill in at left wing? Can you play other flank?’” he stated. “He is to feature in the advanced midfield role, in the middle of the pitch. I have this idea about him for years. I think it fits his style best.”
Tuchel agreed there are times when the player has not looked himself in an national jersey. “You feel as if, ‘Does he like it?’ And a player like him who has such natural delight for the game, then obviously an issue exists, whether it's the position, the environment, I don’t know.
“In my opinion he is also so used to playing for his club in a certain structure, to have a defined role. Believe he profits a lot from clear instructions. What is my position? Where exactly am I to receive the ball? Where am I supposed to push the tempo? Where do I have to defend?
The manager discussed Bellingham bursting through for tap-ins and Foden scoring strikes from 18 yards. He added he has a longlist of 60 players. Several players, others, the goalkeeper and Ruben Loftus-Cheek have dropped out. A new face is recognized for his good displays for City at left-back. Intrigue abounds.
The omission of the striker means there is no like-for-like alternative for Kane in this squad. Interestingly, he suggested deploying the playmaker as a deep-lying striker versus Serbia or Albania. Other options, Marcus Rashford, Bellingham and the winger are other options if he be absent. With qualification secured, this is an opportunity for a little experimentation.
Meanwhile, it is additionally a chance to develop Kane’s relationship with his teammate flowing. It's surprising that you have to go back to Bellingham setting up Kane to net in an international match versus Scotland in September 2023 to find the sole instance in many appearances for England when the pair combined for a goal. The coach will be aware that Kane and Bellingham only passed to each other a single time during the team's ties with Denmark and another at the Euros. Their partnership is lacking.
“At this point at some point it becomes the responsibility of the players,” he said. He does not shy away to speak frankly. There is still a feeling of the player being on trial. He cannot even be guaranteed to start versus Serbia and Albania. The manager desires him onside but he will be monitoring him carefully. Leave self-importance outside. It will make a powerful squad into an even better one.
