Jude Bellingham Has to Cut Out the Immature behavior to Secure a Star Place With Tuchel.
For Bellingham to aims to force his way back into the English strongest squad, he would be wise to eliminate the dramatics. His response after noticing that he was being shown after an evening of inconsistency in the match against Albania was unacceptable.
"I don’t want to make more out of it but I hold to my words 'conduct is crucial' and respect towards the teammates who substitute on," Tuchel said. "Choices are taken and you have to accept it when you're on the field."
There is a lesson for Bellingham. It was unnecessary for a tantrum. The captain had just put the Three Lions 2-0 up in a meaningless match, the game had six minutes to go and he, who had not played particularly well, was just shown a yellow for fouling the Albanian striker. It was not a controversial substitution. Actually it would have been unwise for the head coach to keep Bellingham on the pitch because there was a chance the midfielder would make himself ineligible of the first match of the competition by getting a second yellow card.
Turning the Spotlight on Himself
Yet Bellingham made himself the center of attention. No one could overlook the young midfielder's annoyance as he realized that his replacement was ready for Morgan Rogers. He threw his arms up and even though he shook Tuchel’s hand on his way to the bench it was obvious that the manager did not appreciate it.
This represents the hurdle facing Bellingham. He applauded Marcus Rashford for sending in the ball for Kane to head in his second of the night, but the rest was self-defeating. It is not as if complaining was going to reverse the substitution. The German has talked so much about following squad protocols and the importance of acting professionally.
In the Spotlight
The midfielder, omitted from the team last month, has faced close inspection upon his return to the team recently. Practically he was being assessed and he has not done himself any favours by reacting to coming off the pitch as England rounded off a flawless qualification run by seeing off a tough opposition from Albania.
The Coach's Plan
It means it's unclear on if the squad operate most effectively when Bellingham plays. The performance was inconclusive. Tuchel tried new things from the manager early on. He has given England organization and direction lately, building with a defensive midfielder, a No 8, a No 10 and out-and-out wingers, but it felt different against Albania. The young defender was handed his international debut, Adam Wharton started for the first time internationally and the positioning of the defender as an auxiliary midfielder meant there was faint echo to Manchester City’s team that won three trophies.
A Game of Two Halves
His performance was inconsistent. He created an opportunity for his teammate during the second half but frequently appeared overly eager to shine. There were a lot of hurried and errant passes. A pointless clash with a rival player at the beginning. England were ragged after halftime. A scoring chance for the opponents followed he lost the ball cheaply. His caution occurred when he was dispossessed to Broja and committed a foul on the attacker.
Depth Makes the Difference
Finally the bench quality was decisive. The coach brought on the Manchester City player, who appeared better suited to the role that Bellingham had played earlier in the match, and Saka. Later Saka provided a corner for the captain to score the first goal. It highlighted that dead-ball situations will play a key role at the World Cup.
Connection Remains
Still, though, Bellingham was the story. The quality of Rashford's cross for the second goal was a little lost due to the fuss of the player change. When the match concluded, all eyes were on the midfielder. Tuchel walked up to his side and directed the Real Madrid midfielder towards the away supporters. The bond between them is not broken. The coach isn't ready to discard the player just yet. But if Tuchel is inclined to offer him the central position is not guaranteed.
