Many residents were hurt, including non-combatants affected by the violence.

Access ways continue shut across the area.

Organized Crime Spread

The Comando Vermelho organization have been expanding their influence in the area, expanding narcotics distribution networks and control of the hillside favelas.

Local law enforcement said over 200kg (441lb) of illegal substances were confiscated in the raid, in addition to numerous weapons.

The joint operation by various security forces comes after a year-long investigation.

Many of the individuals are thought to be affiliates of a group from the northern region who are at the moment taking refuge in the city.

Large-scale police operations are not uncommon in Brazil prior to major international events in the country.

The United Nations climate conference COP30 is set to occur in the northern urban center in the eleventh month.
